Energy Manager Excellence Award
Niagara College’s Embedded Energy Manager was recognized for the greatest percentage load saved among all embedded energy managers in Ontario, Fall 2014. Facilities Management Services, Danielle Piluso has instituted operational changes such as optimizing HVAC systems utilizing the building automation system and LED light replacements that have saved more than 2.3 million Kilowatt Hours per year – which amounts to an annual savings of $300,000.
Outstanding Post-Secondary Institution
The Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM) selected Niagara College as the recipient of this year’s Outstanding Postsecondary Institution Award at its annual EECOM Awards of Excellence Ceremony in Ottawa, Oct. 9th 2014. The EECOM Awards recognize individuals and organizations who have collectively influenced Canadians, and helped implement one of EECOM’s key goals – to advance environmental learning.
Top Environmental Organizations in Canada
Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada has listed Niagara College among the top organizations in Canada that demonstrate environmental leadership by employing certified Environmental Professionals, in May 2014. Among NC’s sustainability staff, coordinator Taryn Wilkinson and engagement assistant Gina Pannunzio – both graduates of NC’s Environmental Management and Assessment graduate certificate program – hold an Environmental Professional in Training (EPt) credential from ECO Canada.
Green Business Award
Niagara College was the recipient of the Green Business Award at the June 26 2014 Niagara Region Environmental Awards. Niagara College’s nomination was supported by several leading organizations in Niagara – including the Niagara Sustainability Initiative (NSI), Welland Hydro, Walker Industries and the Niagara Restoration Council – all of whom pointed to Niagara College initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint, conserving energy, improving ecosystems and environmental education.
Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology has received a STARS Bronze Rating Fall 2013, in recognition of their sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Not only is this achievement a win for sustainability on campus, earning a bronze rating for sustainability satisfies one of the core Strategic Plan goals!

Sustainability was recognized at the 2nd annual Evening of Recognition in 2012 hosted by Niagara Sustainability Initiative for being a Carbon Project Member with the greatest progress from 2012 to 2013.
